A step above the rest: Key SS’11 footwear trends

Though designers haven’t exactly re-invented the wheel with this year’s footwear trends, there is still a lot for winter worn feet to look forward to. “Nothing says spring like a pair of colorful espadrilles,” says Sonya Cosentini, spokesperson for Marshalls. “This year shoppers will find the popular Spanish-style sandals in all heel heights and a variety of colors for every occasion.”

Combine this with the season’s textured boat shoes, daring wedges, lollipop hued sandals and suddenly we have the makings for very happy feet. Here are some of the key footwear trends that will be available this spring.

Ballet Flats. Flirty and feminine style mavens will love the resurgence of floral details prevalent on the toes of sweet ballet flats. Organza rosettes, satin rosebuds and colorful leather petals bring a refreshing transformation to casual separates. While these special touches create a delicate air, the materials used to create them shouldn’t be.

Floral trims and appliqués that are not reinforced with fusing or a backing wear will quickly over time, and you may find after only a few wears that your once beautiful blossom has suddenly wilted. Check to ensure that textile embellishments are securely stitched down otherwise the pretty petals are only as good as the glue that holds them. Other lovely spring details to look for in store include bows, jewels, zippers and neutral tone lace.

Wedges. Wedges have returned to the fashion glossies for spring 2011 in a parade of colors, textures and styles. Seamlessly blending fashion and comfort, wedge styles are an ideal accompaniment to the sweeping dresses and skirts that epitomize the arrival of warmer weather. Wearers may find that one of the top benefits of wedges is that they are often easier to walk in than a high heel. The shape of the wedge provides additional support from the toe to the heel, assisting with balance. As with heels, wedges can be purchased in varying heights from high to low.

When accessorizing for wedge styles, keep scale in proportion. The shape of a wedge shoe is best balanced with looser fitting apparel and fuller leg jeans. If pairing a wedge with slim-cut apparel is a must, skip the chunky variety and opt for a slender wedge which will minimize the bulk.

Gladiator Sandals. Glamorous gladiators give a luxe edge to the look of the season, from casual shorts to sexy evening wear. A pair of gold, silver, or bronze gladiator sandals will gorgeously accent metallic evening dresses and sleek leather sandals take on an earthy air when worn with light weight cotton dresses and colorful printed skirts.

The animal trend has crept its way into footwear in the form of reptile printed gladiator sandals. These styles are ideal for dressing up casual trousers, denims and crops. By pairing them with basic styles, these shoes add a fashionable pop that isn’t too over the top. For an evening look, animal printed gladiator sandals can be stylishly worn with solid colored evening apparel bought in a flattering cut.

Other key trends include perforated uppers, polished wooden heels, and neutral color combinations. Whatever your taste, accessorize your favorite spring looks from the lineup of fashionable footwear to ensure you step out in style.
